Prepping for a hydrogen or methane breath test
Whether your hydrogen or methane test is for:
- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
- Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO)
- Lactose malabsorption
- Fructose malabsorption
- Other carbohydrate digestion concerns
You will likely have a few questions about the preparation diet. Here’s what you need to know to ensure your testing process goes smoothly.
Why Prep for a Breath Test?
Breath testing is the gold standard approach for measuring gases produced by bacterial fermentation in the digestive tract.
But it’s important to carefully prep to minimize background gas levels. Your results should reflect your physiology—not your recent meals.
Your QuinTron Breath Test Kit includes instructions to help you use it confidently. In the Instructions for Use (IFU), you’ll find a list of permitted foods.
Always follow the instructions with your test kit and your clinician’s advice. These take priority over examples here.
Understanding the 24-Hour Breath Test Preparation Process
Breath testing prep is a two-phase process.
First 12 hours: Restricted Diet
- Consume only foods from the permitted list below.
Final 12 hours: Fasting Period
- Consume only plain water.
- Continue to take prescribed medications as directed by your clinician.*
- Avoid vitamins and supplements, unless directed by your clinician.
- Brush your teeth as usual.
- Ensure you wake up at least one hour before starting the test.
*If you’re unsure about medications or supplements, ask your clinician before changing anything.
Additional Test Restrictions
To support accurate breath test results:
- Do not smoke or vape for two hours before and throughout the test.
- Do not sleep or exercise for one hour before and throughout the test.
These restrictions help ensure the accuracy of the test.
Permitted Foods During the 12-Hour Breath Test Prep Diet
So, what can you eat during the 12-hour prep before a breath test?
Only consume foods from this list:
Protein
- Eggs
- Plain tofu
- Baked or broiled seafood
- Baked or broiled chicken or turkey (no deli meat)
- Baked or broiled lean beef or lean pork (no deli meat)
- Plain lean ground beef, turkey, or chicken (90% lean or higher; unseasoned and without fillers)
Carbohydrates
- Steamed white rice
- Plain white bread
- Boiled or mashed potatoes (no skin)
- Boiled or mashed carrots (no skin)
- Boiled or mashed turnips (no skin)
Beverages

Fats and seasoning
- Olive oil (minimal)

No garlic, onion, spice blends, sauces, butter, dairy products, marinades, breadcrumbs, or additional ingredients.
Keeping ingredients simple reduces fermentation before your breath test!
Dietary Preferences or Food Sensitivities?
If you have food allergies, dietary preferences such as vegetarian eating, or personal intolerances, choose only from the permitted foods that align with your needs. Do not introduce new foods or substitutes that are not listed above.
If you are unsure whether a specific food is appropriate during preparation, consult your clinician before making changes.
